What is DSD or Digital Smile Design?

Patients are increasingly looking for less predefined and cinematic smiles and are becoming more and more true to their own personality. They therefore want a smile that is uniquely theirs, naturally beautiful and in harmony with their physical appearance – but also with their character.

Creating flawless proportions and creating an ideal smile is the main task of DSD, which is why it has become an indispensable tool in aesthetic dental medicine in recent years.
We live in an era of rapid technological progress, which inevitably leaves a strong mark on every segment of modern life. Everything that was difficult to imagine 20 years ago, today, with the help of sophisticated technology, happens almost daily.

Thanks to technological progress and the availability of information, today's patients have a clear vision of how to address their aesthetic shortcomings and a clear vision of their new smile.

Advanced software analyzes and processes the appearance of the face during different movements and emotional reactions, as well as the smile and all dental proportions of the patient. Based on these parameters, a digital representation of the ideal smile is created: a smile that optimally adapts to the facial expression of each person, with all precise vector measurements and a visualization of the differences in appearance between the existing and the "new" smile.

This is precisely the best feature of DSD: in addition to the fact that patients immediately see a simulation of their new smile, they can explain their wishes and expectations to a team of dental experts who, based on their skills, can also correct the appearance of the new smile. In this way, patients themselves participate in the creation of their new smile – natural, bright and confident.

Why DSD?

The slogan "the smile you see in advance" best describes the essence of DSD technology.
Why? Until DSD, patients could only see their final smile once the entire procedure was completed. To do this, they had to rely on the expertise and experience of the chosen doctor and dental technician.
Now, for the first time, a patient can see a three-dimensional representation of their final smile during their first visit to our clinics. In addition, in collaboration with a team of dental experts, the patient can participate in the creation of their own smile with their suggestions and proposals.
This is a great motivation for patients to start treatment and at the same time a great help for doctors for easier and faster planning.

FAQ

Who is DSD suitable for?

We recommend Digital Smile Design to:

  • patients with aesthetic problems such as discoloration, irregular tooth shapes or gaps between teeth.
  • patients with dental problems such as damaged or broken teeth or worn teeth.
  • patients with existing prosthetics, who are dissatisfied with their existing work.
  • patients who want comprehensive changes and a complete transformation of their smile.
  • patients with specific aesthetic goals related to weddings or special events, or for professional needs - when the profession requires an impeccable smile, e.g. in actors, models or public speakers.

What are the main advantages of the DSD protocol?

  1. Personalized approach – DSD allows for detailed planning of each smile based on the specific proportions of the face and the wishes of the patient. Each smile is unique and completely adapted to the patient, which ensures a natural and harmonious appearance.
  2. Visualization of results – one of the main advantages of DSD is that patients can see the desired appearance of their smile before starting any procedure. This simulation gives the patient security and confidence in the final result.
  3. Greater precision – the use of digital technology allows dentists to accurately plan each stage of the treatment, reducing the possibility of errors and ensuring a better final result.
  4. Better communication – digital models and simulations allow for clear communication between the dentist and the patient. The patient can more easily express his/her wishes and the dentist can explain the process in detail and show what the final smile will look like.
  5. Greater patient satisfaction – the patient has the opportunity to see and approve the appearance of the future smile, thus reducing the risk of dissatisfaction with the result. DSD allows for greater control over the procedure, which significantly contributes to patient satisfaction.
  6. Faster process and fewer adjustments – precise planning means fewer adjustments are needed during the procedure, which often speeds up the entire process and reduces the number of visits to the dentist.
  7. Aesthetic perfection – DSD allows for a combination of aesthetic and functional solutions – the new smile will not only look fantastic, but will be fully functional and enjoyable for the patient.

How long does therapy last according to the DSD protocol?

DSD therapy can last from one week to several months. The exact length of time depends on the specifics of each case, including the complexity of the patient's aesthetic and functional needs.

What is the treatment plan according to the DSD protocol?

DSD therapy consists of several phases that can last from several weeks to several months.

  • First visit: During this visit, digital and video recordings of the patient's face and smile are made. This examination usually lasts one to two hours.
  • Planning and design: Based on the data collected, the dental team uses the DSD computer program to analyze and design the ideal smile. This process can take from one hour to a week, depending on the complexity of the case and the dentist's schedule.
  • Presentation of the project: At the next visit, the patient is shown a digital simulation of the new smile and any corrections are agreed upon. This phase also lasts from one to two hours.
  • Implementation of the therapy: Depending on the necessary interventions (e.g. veneers, crowns, orthodontic treatment), the process can last from several weeks to several months. Each individual intervention may require several visits to the dentist.
  • Final steps and adjustments: After all the necessary elements have been placed, the patient comes for final checks and needed adjustments.

"Digital Smile Design (DSD) allows me to plan personalized smiles and visualize the results before the procedure, which gives patients confidence in the final outcome. This technology allows me to be precise and communicate better with patients, reducing the possibility of errors. DSD speeds up the process, reduces the number of adjustments and increases patient satisfaction. By combining aesthetic and functional solutions, patients get a natural, harmonious and fully functional smile – not pre-made “movie” smiles."
